W: What should I do before my new job begins in three weeks? I haven't planned a long trip and all of my friends will be busy.

M: You could go to  the theater, which you normally don't have time to do.

Text 2

M: Which sweater do you like better on me — the blue one or the black one?

W: Sweaters are comfortable, but I don't think you look great in them, dear. Besides, a suit jacket will make you look more businesslike.

Text 3

M: That music group was better than I had expected. I can’t believe how many people showed up for the show.

W: I agree. It was nice of the school to hold it here too. I’m sure the Cancer Foundation was able to get a large donation from it.

Text 4

W: My father doesn’t eat meat, but we only have chicken and eggs. What should we make for the main dish?

M: I’ll order some Indian food. He loves that mixed vegetable dish.

Text 5

W: I really want to go for a workout, but I need to finish this assignment first.

M: What’s your assignment about? It’s not that science essay assigned a few days ago, is it?

W: No.This one is actually writing a computer program. It’s not hard, but I’m tired of sitting here.

M: OK, I have all the paints I need. Now I'll buy some more brushes.

W: What? You have lots and lots of brushes. You bought some last month, didn't you?

M: Yes, but they were for water painting. The paints I have bought are oil paints, so I need a different type of brush.

W: I see. Will you need some more paper, too?

M: I don't use paper for oil painting. I'm going to use the piece of board I took back home last week.

W: Ah, I looked at that yesterday. I wondered what it was for.

听下面一段对话,回答第8至10题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 7

W: I measured Danny and Judy today.

M: Oh? How much have they grown?

W: You won't believe it. Two months ago, Danny was 41 inches tall. This morning, he was 43 inches!

M: That's fast! What about Judy?

W: I last measured her four months ago, and she was 48 inches. Now, she is 50.

M: It seems that Danny is growing twice as fast as Judy, then.

W: Well, he is three years younger than her. When she was his age, she was also growing more quickly.

M: You're right. I wonder if our kids will become very tall.

W: Danny is taller than all of the children in his class except for one. Compared with her friends, Judy seems to be on the shorter side.

听下面一段对话,回答第11至13题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 8

M: I can't believe how many natural disasters have happened in the world in recent years!

W: I only know about the Australian wildfires. What else did you hear about?

M: Well, a volcano in the Philippines has started to erupt.

W: That country has at least 20 active volcanoes.

M: Taal Volcano is especially active right now.  The people there are getting prepared for it to erupt any day. Some villagers were actually living on the volcano itself. The government moved about 6,000 people off Luzon Island when it became covered with a thick blanket of volcano dust.  Now, they are planning to clear an area at least 10 miles from the volcano for the people to live.

W: That doesn't sound far enough! I wouldn't live on that island again.

M: The president of the country feels the same way. He's trying to declare the island a "no man's land" so that no one can live there.

W: Indonesia has even more volcanoes. Out of 400, 127 are active.

M: True. It's a very beautiful country, but also naturally dangerous. Earthquakes are even more frequent than volcano eruptions there.

听下面一段对话,回答第14至17题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。

Text 9

M: I want to register for this mathematics course.

W: I'm sorry. Registration in the computer system has closed.

M: Closed? But the clerk told me I could come back and register any time during the first week of classes.

W: Well, that's not possible. Who told you that anyway?

M: Some woman here when I tried to register three weeks ago. She said I just had to pay a late fee.

W: She must have been a temporary worker. Why didn't you register then?

M: She said I couldn't until I had my driving licence. I don't drive so I don't have a driver's license.

W: Huh. That's not necessary. We only need a phone bill with your name and address on it.

M: Really only proof of my address?

W: Yes,I'm afraid she gave you the wrong information. Still you'll have to wait and take your math class next semester.

M: But that's unfair.

W: Well, I sympathize with your problem, but I don't think there is anything I can do for you. You can talk to the director. But don't get your hopes up.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至20题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 10

More than 3,000 people swam across a river in Guangdong Province in a move to make people more aware of environmental protection for the major waterway in South China.

The swimmers, including teenagers and elders in their 60s,crossed the 450-meter-wide section of the Pearl River in Guangzhou.

Local authorities organized the swimming activity to show the pollution treatment achievement on the country's third longest river, and make people more aware of environmental protection.

A 62-year-old swimmer said the water quality had been improved in recent years and now could match the cleanness when he swam in the river in his childhood.

A mass crossing of the river was once held in the 1970s,but for many years since then,it had been impossible for a large group of people to swim across it because of heavy industrial pollution.

Guangdong government has spent tens of millions of U. S.dollars controlling the pollution by shutting down or moving heavily polluting factories.
